Our Untouched Stamp

~Melissa Wernke

Yesterday I closed my eyes

and upon my mind an envelope.

Light blue, crisp, a stamp yet untouched

appeared so bright before me.

And I left it sealed.

I thought I might mail it today

but waited and decided not.

I'm sure you won't mind.

I'd forgotten what was written.

Probably talk of the weather,

as our North Wind blows frigid.

Perhaps I just told you of my school so far away.

I know it's cold there too. At least, that's what I've heard.

And of course, I'd honored strong our old tradition,

our silent vow without return address.

It must have been the same with your father.

It must have started before I was born.

Well, anyways... that's all really.

You would probably agree.

It wasn't too important...

We'll speak instead another day.
